Presentations and Tutorials

Below you can find links to the slides from some of the presentations that Ken and I have given. There is an inherent difficulty with looking through slides outside the actual presentation; insofar as slides are used only as guides, cues, and visuals for the meat of the presentation (the monologue) they are of limited value. However, I (Aaron) have received several requests for slides from my presentations, so they must be worth something to some people. If you have any requests, comments, or questions regarding the material in the presentations below, please do not hesitate to contact us. And if you'd like to arrange for a presentation or tutorial on complex systems and/or agent-based modeling at your institution or company, then please visit our invited talks page.

Presentation slides and ABM models for Gent University'a CSI-ABM Summer School: Agent-based Modelling in Economics held 15-19 September 2014. An introductions to agent-based modeling theory and practice including hands-on projects, advanced features, and best practices in generative model methodologogy.

Foundations for Complexity Science Presentation

Presentation slides for my Lecture at the Civil Service College of Singapore on March 11, 2013. The topic is a closer look at some conceptual issues at the foundations of a science of complexity. Is complexity really anti-reductionist? What is the relationship between levels of organization? How can we explore these relationships? What is the difference between studying a complex system and studying complexity? And others.

Presentation slides for my Lecture at the Civil Service College of Singapore on September 25, 2012. This presentation covers the basic features of complexity theory, and why agent-based models are best suited to study the causal structures and dynamics of complex adaptive systems. Various features of ABMs are described, as well as caveats for how and for what purposes to use them.

Presentation slides and additional material for my Masters Class at the Civil Service College of Singapore on September 11 and 12, 2012...also repeated on September 20 and 21 (see poster). This workshop provides an introductory treatment of complexity theory and the application of formal models to better understand the causal structures and dynamics of complex adaptive systems. Although a breadth of methodologies will be surveyed to understand the foundations of complexity, we will focus on agent-based models because it offers capabilities especially useful for capturing complex systems.

The slides and Netlogo materials for a five-day ABM workshop for professors and graduate students organized by the Universities of Tilburg and Ghent. The workshop took place in Spa, Belgium in May 2012 and was intended for participants with little or no modeling of computer code-writing background..

OSU 2010 - Workshop on Computer Modeling

Category: Workshops
Posted by: Aaron

This two day workshop introduces agent-based modeling with Netlogo. The first day starts Thomas Schelling's famous segregation (aka tipping) model and demonstrates how to extend the model in various ways. It is meant to demonstrate how easy it is to make useful qualitative changes to existing research with just a little Netlogo knowledge. Each extension is motivated, demonstrated, and the code as well as the results are provided. The second day demonstrates more advanced features of Netlogo: networks, import data, behavior space, shapes editor, etc. This accompanying website includes all the models and slides for the workshop.

Presentation slides and additional material for the summer 2009 ICSPR complexity class lab sessions on agent-based modeling. The course includes a general introduction of the benefits and limitations of ABMs and a thorough introduction to NetLogo (including exercises, tips, code snippets, etc.). This year the workshop is available for credit so the style of the course has changed a bit with more structure and a altered pace. Click on the headline above to get to the class materials. Material is added as it becomes developed.

This presentation introduces Thomas Schelling's famous segregation (aka tipping) model and demonstrates how to extend the model in various ways. It is meant to demonstrate how easy it is to make useful qualitative changes to existing research with just a little Netlogo knowledge. Each extension is motivated, demonstrated, and the code as well as the results are provided. In additoin to this slideshow there is an accompanying HTML file that includes an applet of the base model, the documentation, and links to download each extended version (with extensive commenting to describe the changes and spur students for more). This 90-minute talk was prepared for the University of Michigan's Complex Systems Advanced Academic Workshop (CSAAW) to address the benefits and current limitation of agent-based modeling (and other complex systems techniques) and to propose various directions into which future research could expand to overcome some of these limitations. The presentation is available here in pdf format.
